VERIFIED FACT

Oxford University is older than the Aztec Empire.

Why this sounds fake

Universities feel modern while the Aztecs feel ancient, so we instinctively place them in the wrong order.

Oxford feels old, but the comparison still bends the timeline. Teaching existed at Oxford by at least 1096. The Aztec capital Tenochtitlan was founded centuries later, around 1325, and the Aztec Empire formed later still. So one of the world's most famous universities was already teaching before the empire many people file under ancient history had even begun. The surprise comes from how recent the Aztec Empire is compared with the medieval institutions Europe still uses today. Your brain puts them in the opposite order. That is the whole jolt.
